D.I.Y. Fabric Necklace

At one of the recent events that I attended, I was asked where did I buy the clutch I was carrying.  Trust me its amazing to say “I made it”! It is always fun to make your stuff and flaunt it. Today’s post is a step by step guide to make your own Half-Braided Fabric Necklace.

Supplies:

  1. Set of fabrics of your choice (I chose plain shades of pink with one floral print )
  2. Matching thread
  3. Sewing Machine
  4. Big button
  5. Measuring tape
  6. Scissors
  7. Stapler/ Pin
  8. Needle

Step 1
Select 4-5 different fabrics of your choice. These can be of different prints or colors but should look nice together.Step 2
Decide on the length of the necklace and cut the fabric into strips of 1.5 times the decided length and 2 cm wide (You will know in step 6 why you need this extra length). Cut 9 such strips.
Step 3
Once you have the 9 strips, sew the wrong side of each strip making it a hollow pipe of fabric.

Step 4
After you have done that, turn all 9 strips inside out showing the right side of the fabric  (Tip: you can use a hairpin-needle which you can push all the way  from bottom of the tube to the top in order to turn the strip inside out)Step 5
Make 3 sets of 3 strips each as shown in the picture.
Step 6
Now braid these three sets as shown. Now you can go for a full braided necklace or a half braided necklace. In a half braided necklace the braided part will be only in the center. Braiding actually reduces the length of the necklace, so you need the extra length.

Step 7
After you finish braiding, take one corner of the necklace and stitch the loose ends with a needle and multi-layered thread (To give it a thick look). Insert a button and make a loop at the end. Now roll the thread neatly around this loop for a smooth ending of the necklace. Once done tie 2 knots near the button to make sure that the thread does not come out.

Step 8
Do a similar thread loop on the other end of the necklace but leave a small loop(big enough to button up the necklace) and then roll the thread neatly around the entire length.

Like it??? Do leave a comment if you found the steps easy or too difficult.
